This weekend, we gave our son a memorable adventure that perfectly captured summer in Seattle—we took him to The Center for Wooden Boats (CWB) for his very first rowboat experience, thanks to their fantastic Public Peapod Program.

What Is the Public Peapod Program?

The Center for Wooden Boats, nestled in Seattle’s vibrant South Lake Union, is all about getting people of all ages out on the water and connecting them to the city’s maritime heritage. The Public Peapod Program offers free one-hour rentals of traditional wooden rowboats known as “peapods,” available Wednesdays through Sundays all year round. These charming boats can hold up to 4 or 5 adults and are designed to be stable and comfortable—even perfect for first-time rowers, families, and adventurous kids123.

Arriving at the Center: Warm Welcomes and Hands-On History

Upon arrival, we were immediately struck by the CWB’s community spirit. Volunteers and staff were friendly, helping us sign up and get fitted for lifejackets. As we waited our turn, we wandered the docks, admiring both classic wooden sailboats and whimsical toy boat-building activities happening nearby4. Our son’s excitement was bubbling over, especially as he peered into the workshop where master boatbuilders restored vintage boats right before our eyes.

The Peapod Rowboat: A Perfect Fit for Families

Our turn finally arrived. We stepped into a beautifully restored wooden rowboat—a real peapod!—and the gentle rocking set the scene. My son was wide-eyed (and a bit nervous) as he took his place on the bench. With a little instruction from the staff, we were off! The peapod glided smoothly over Lake Union, easy to steer and forgiving to learn on.

Our son was soon giggling over the shimmer of the water and the sounds of city life blending with the peaceful lapping of the oars. We pointed out ducklings, admired Seattle’s skyline, and took in views of houseboats and kayakers. It was empowering for our little one to paddle alongside us, and the staff’s encouragement made him feel like a real mariner out on his maiden voyage5.

Why the CWB Peapod Program is Worth a Visit

  • Immersive & Educational—Kids learn about water safety, rowing, boatbuilding, and local maritime history all in one place67.

Our Verdict

Our family’s peapod rowboat adventure was genuinely special. Seeing our son’s sense of accomplishment and sheer joy as he helped row made it an unforgettable family memory. The Center for Wooden Boats’ Peapod Program is a Seattle gem we’d recommend to any family looking for hands-on fun and a dash of adventure on the water.
